Happy Monday, Alameda! And welcome to another edition of The Broad Brush, where we give you (or try to give you, anyway) the week's news stories in two sentences or less. Here's what's going on this week.
This week brings the proverbial hat trick of city and school business (you can call it Municipal Madness) starting with Monday's Planning Board meeting, where a new plan detailing sites where housing can be built and how much and another to build a $189 million transportation improvement project - in Oakland - will be discussed. That'll start at 7 p.m. at City Hall. Then it's a twofer on Tuesday when the City Council meets to talk about their budget in the wake of the decisive failure of the Measure C sales tax increase and the Board of Education considers adopting a tentative calendar for the first three months of the next school year, along with Measure A parcel tax spending for 2012-2013 and a proposed lease for a new district office facility. The school board meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Alameda High School cafeteria while the council meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at City Hall. We'll have live video of the school board meeting on The Alamedan's Ustream channel and a full report from each of these meetings on the front page.
Friday marks the beginning of summer break for Alameda's public school students, and with break comes another summer institution: Road projects. The Posey Tube will be closed this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:01 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the following day for washing, so if you need to get off the Island during those times, you'll need to seek out another route. Meanwhile, the city will be doing street work on Central Avenue between Webster Street and Pacific Avenue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays for about three weeks, and its annual street repair and resurfacing efforts begin June 18 and continue through August 31 (here's a list of where the projects will be).
And here's a quick plug for All Together Now, a benefit event for the Alameda Education Foundation, that'll be taking place this Saturday, June 16 at the Harbor Bay Club. Tickets and information on the event are available here.
