The City Council will be considering a pair of key decisions Tuesday with implications for the both the near-term and farther-flung future of Alameda Point. The council will consider whether to hire a new company to manage and lease all of the city’s property – including Alameda Point – and also, whether to approve a proposed list of evaluation criteria for assessing development proposals for the former Navy base.
“It’s always great when Tim brings a new project to fill the chambers,” City Planner Andrew Thomas joked Monday of C. Timothy Hoppen, president of Harbor Bay Isle Associates.
Opponents of a proposal to build 80 luxury homes where the Harbor Bay Club now stands are saying the club was offered long ago in lieu of planned recreation space and that residents would lose their primary recreational space if the club is moved into the Harbor Bay Business Park.
Harbor Bay Isle Associates and a related company that operates the Harbor Bay Club are asking the city’s permission to move the fitness club to a nine-acre site in the Harbor Bay Business Park and to build 80 luxury homes in its stead.
Alameda's City Council voted early this morning to nix a proposal to swap the Mif Albright golf course to developer Ron Cowan for cash and land he owns nearby and to direct city staff to negotiate with two firms for a management contract at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex. The swap proposal fell on a 5-0 vote, drawing cheers from opponents who packed council chambers.
